We all know someone who does live in, has lived in, has a relative or friend that lives in, moved to or moved away from (and sometimes moved back to) Memphis. All these people have a story. They all are or were part of a movement, and that movement is Memphis.
Our great-grandparents told us about living in Memphis during the era of “Boss” Edward H. Crump and our grandparents and parents painted a picture of what it was like to see Elvis live at the Mid-South Coliseum. They explained to us how tragic it was the day Martin Luther King Jr. was shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel.
We listen to stories about the great 1973 Memphis State Tigers basketball team lead by Gene Bartow and Larry Finch. We remember Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway’s first game at the newly constructed Pyramid Arena. Most of us were at the Liberty Bowl 1996 when the Memphis Tigers football team scored their first ever victory against Peyton Manning’s Tennessee Volunteers and were there again in 2015 when the unranked Tigers stomped 13th-ranked Ole Miss on national television.
These stories are a part of what it means to be a Memphian, and I will capture these stories here for you to enjoy. Memphians, some life-long and some who are new to calling Memphis home will share their experiences in the Bluff City. Some are household names, some are not, but they all provide unique accounts as to why they love this city.
I am passionate about Memphis and love to learn new things about the place I’ve called home since I was born. I hope this site will help you connect to the 901 in a new way and show you the amazing things and people Memphis has to offer. We are going to go on this journey together and see how this blog evolves.
Enjoy reading and if you have someone who you think has a great Memphis story, please let me know!
